Why should I Upgrade My Supply Pipe to MDPE?

16 June 2017

Older properties may have an original lead, galvanised steel, copper or black poly pipe supplying the property with water from the water authorities main. These sorts of pipes are not as reliable as the new mdpe (medium density poly ethylene) pipes that are now put in new properties as a matter of course. If you have an older pipe in your property you may be more susceptible to leaks occurring which can be costly and lead to disruption.

What is an MDPE Pipe?

MDPE stands for medium density poly ethylene which is a tough and flexible plastic. This makes it perfect for use on cold water mains for new builds in both domestic and commercial properties. There are several different sizes that can be used, the larger size will increase the flow rate to the property. Many property owners choose to upgrade from older pipes to new mdpe pipes for the peace of mind that they have a more reliable pipe.

What are the benefits of an MDPE Pipe?

These pipes are much more reliable and durable than older materials used, giving you peace of mind that you are less susceptible burst pipes. They come in several sizes which means you can increase the flow rate to your property which is necessary if you want to put in any high spec equipment such as power showers with a megaflow system.  Unlike some old pipes these pipes are virtually corrosion free.
If you have experienced a leak on an older pipe then it is often a good idea to relay the whole pipe in the new mdpe as opposed to just repairing the old one. It is common that once you have suffered from a leak and it has been repaired then this will bring the water flow back to normal and you  will be more susceptible to another leak. On shorter supplies, repairing 2 leaks can sometimes be more costly than relaying the whole pipe in the first instance.
